Embracing Self-Care: A Personal Journey

The dawn of a new year always brings with it a sense of reflection, and this year is no different. As I look back over the past few years, I am struck by the sheer magnitude of the challenges I've faced, both in my personal life and in my professional career. Even as I struggle with a seasonal cold, I find myself feeling grateful for the hard-won lessons that these experiences have taught me.

“My neglect of self-care wasn’t due to lack of time or money…

But a lack of self-worth”

As a beauty professional, one might assume that I would be a champion of self-care. Ironically, this hasn't been the case. My neglect of self-care wasn't due to a lack of time or money; it was rooted in a deeper issue - a lack of self-worth. The idea of engaging in even basic self-care felt like an unwarranted indulgence, something that I didn't deserve.

This realization has led me to delve deeper into the psychology of self-care. Neuroscience has clearly demonstrated that self-care has a profound and positive impact on our mental health. Yet, many of us, myself included, actively resist it. Why is this the case? And more importantly, how can we change this deeply ingrained pattern of behavior?

Perhaps it's the societal pressures that equate self-care with selfishness, or perhaps it's the internalized belief that we must constantly be productive to be worthy. Whatever the root cause, it's clear that there is a disconnect between our intellectual understanding of the importance of self-care and our actual behavior. Bridging this gap is a crucial step towards achieving true well-being.

In the coming year, I am committed to making self-care a priority. This isn't about adding more tasks to my to-do list; it's about a fundamental shift in my mindset. It's about recognizing that I am worthy of care and that self-care is not a luxury, but a necessity.

Neuroscience has provided substantial evidence demonstrating that self-care can trigger a cascade of positive effects on our mental health. Engaging in activities that promote our well-being can lead to improved mood, reduced stress levels, and enhanced cognitive function. Despite this knowledge, many individuals, myself included, often resist self-care. This resistance can stem from various factors, including:

  • Misconceptions about self-care: Some may view self-care as indulgent or selfish, believing that prioritizing their own needs is neglectful of others.

  • Time constraints: Busy schedules and demanding responsibilities can make it challenging to carve out time for self-care activities.

  • Lack of awareness: Individuals may not fully understand the importance of self-care or know which activities are most beneficial for their well-being.

  • Guilt: Some may feel guilty for taking time for themselves, particularly if they have others who depend on them.

  • Mental health conditions: Depression, anxiety, and other mental health conditions can make it difficult to engage in self-care, as they often sap energy and motivation.

To overcome these barriers and improve self-care practices, several strategies can be employed:

  • Reframing self-care: Recognize that self-care is not selfish but rather essential for maintaining good mental and physical health. It enables us to better care for others and fulfill our responsibilities.

  • Scheduling self-care: Treat self-care activities as non-negotiable appointments in your schedule. Prioritize them as you would any other high-priority commitment.

  • Educating yourself: Learn about the various forms of self-care and identify activities that resonate with you and address your specific needs.

  • Starting small: Begin with small, manageable self-care practices and gradually incorporate more as you become comfortable.

  • Seeking support: Talk to friends, family, or a therapist about your challenges with self-care and seek their support in developing a self-care plan.

  • Practicing self-compassion: Be kind and understanding towards yourself if you struggle with self-care. Remember that it's a journey, not a destination.

By addressing these barriers and actively incorporating self-care into our lives, we can enhance our mental health, improve our overall well-being, and cultivate a more positive and fulfilling life.
