Unlock Glowing Skin with Microneedling
The thought of navigating the realm of skin rejuvenation may evoke all kinds of ideas, and can indeed be overwhelming due to the multitude of available options. However, at Trinity Esthetics, we believe that the ultimate goal of any skin rejuvenation treatment is to enhance the skin's health and vitality. I want to talk about one such form of rejuvenation, specifically - microneedling - and its many benefits for a plethora of skin conditions.
Microneedling, also known as collagen induction therapy, is a cosmetic procedure that involves using a specialized device with tiny needles to create controlled micro-injuries in the skin. These micro-injuries stimulate the body's natural wound healing response, triggering a cascade of processes that ultimately lead to skin regeneration and rejuvenation. While it is touted for treating various conditions, there are some that respond best. Wrinkles and scars are top of the list! Pigmentation concerns, enlarged pores, stretch marks, rosacea, and alopecia are other conditions that may be augmented with collagen induction therapy. Microneedling employs microinjury which optimizes cell function and regeneration through amplification of cell-to-cell communication. The micro-injuries caused trigger the body's natural healing mechanisms, initiating the production of new collagen and elastin. Collagen is a protein that provides structure and firmness to the skin, while elastin allows the skin to stretch and recoil. By stimulating collagen and elastin production, we improve skin texture, firmness, and overall appearance.
Skin rejuvenation comes in the form of mechanical, chemical, and thermal injury. Microneedling falls in the mechanical category, and does an excellent job of optimizing skin cell function, preserving the integrity of the epidermis (the outer layer of our skin), breaking down scar tissue and increasing natural collagen. The first priority of any skin rejuvenation practice should be to balance cell function. This is perhaps the most neglected area in the esthetics industry, and yet it assists in accomplishing most of the goals - e.g. smooth, plump, firm, evenly pigmented skin.
The process of traditional microneedling, including the areas of the face and neck, is usually about a 75 minute office visit. The skin is first properly cleansed to remove surface makeup, dirt and oil. A topical lidocaine anesthetic is then applied and left on the skin for 15-20 minutes. Once removed, the process of needling begins, and should take roughly 45 minutes to complete. During treatment, a skin serum containing essential ingredients such as amino acids, vitamin C, and hyaluronic acid is applied. It helps in providing necessary building blocks for proper skin functioning. It is normal to experience pinpoint bleeding during the procedure, but bruising is rare. Erythema, which is redness caused by inflammation, is common immediately after the treatment, but it usually subsides on its own within 24-48 hours post-treatment. Microneedling results can be seen gradually over time, and there is no limit to the number of treatments one can undergo.
You may have also heard of “RF microneedling”, or radio frequency microneedling, which combines the benefits of traditional microneedling with the added advantage of radio frequency energy. The main differences between traditional and RF microneedling are the heat component included with RF, the depth to which needle application is introduced in the skin, and the ability of RF microneedling to help treat loose, sagging skin.
Trinity Esthetics offers both types of microneedling, and our approach reflects a client-centered philosophy, emphasizing collaboration and customization for optimal results. Recognizing that skincare extends beyond in-office treatments, we acknowledge the importance of lifestyle choices and proper at-home skincare routines in achieving optimum results. Factors such as diet, exercise, sun exposure, and skincare products can influence treatment outcomes. As a result, we educate and advise clients on necessary adjustments and modifications to enhance the effectiveness of microneedling and promote long-term skin health!
